Description
ANZAC Day is a multinational commemoration of fallen soldiers. Originally to honour members of the Australian & New Zealand Armed Corps killed at Gallipoli. The event now includes all Australians lost in conflict. Pictured is a 'squatter' or gentleman military settler who selected colonial land as payment for service. Aboriginal losses, particularly from introduced disease and starvation, outnumber those of the settlers by ten to one. Aboriginal leader Yagan was implicated in the attack and shot the following year by bounty hunters. A statue in memory of Yagan was erected on Herrison island.
