Free Culture Research Conference Logo Contest
Winning Submission
A Note From the Judges
We'd like to acknowledge the contributions of several designers who stood out during this contest. Hank0071 impressed us with his select but always high-quality submissions; they are simple yet effective designs that we can really work with for our purposes. A few of the designs ended up becoming favourites, and we eventually converged on one as the grand winner. Timeth was a close second in our view as he was able to produce some truly beautiful and appropriate designs. Isacvale made very interesting conceptual designs, as did kuba. Any of these designers could have easily been our top choice, and we wholeheartedly thank them for their efforts. Finally, we also wish to acknowledge the many original submissions from aungkarns as well as the passion and humour of inky2010, both of whom made this a more vibrant contest in their own, unique way. Many thanks, too, to everyone else! Keep up the good work folks! You are an inspiration to us and to the work we do as academics.

Overview
The Free Culture movement promotes the sharing of ideas and the flow of creativity through free content - thereby spurring the distribution of creative works. Operating outside the control of copyright industries, Openclipart is a platform for free culture, allowing users to download free clip art and also to upload their own creations for others to freely use.
Because of the inherent community interaction and ripe territory for research, academics from various disciplines have taken an interest in the study of Free Culture. It is thus, that some years ago, the idea for an annual Free Culture Research Conference was born.
The Free Culture Research Conference is now in its third iteration and will take place in Berlin, October 8-9, 2010: http://wikis.fu-berlin.de/display/fcrc/Home
Details
The conference organizers wish to establish an identity for the event through the selection, use and promotion of an appropriate and memorable logo.
Ideally, the logo should:
- indicate that this is an academic research event, i.e. an event for scholars rather than artists, policy-makers, or activists.
- communicate that this is an event about free culture, which is an umbrella term for many interrelated initiatives
- be usable year-by-year, on different websites and with different designs, online or on print (so, it should not include a date, should have a relatively easy time blending in with changing website colours and designs, and should be made available in both high-res/print and low-res/web formats)
The winning entry will receive:
- Acknowledgement of the designer on the events pages
- Eternal gratitude
- Fame :)
- An invitation to attend the conference (however, all participants to the confence must find their own funding at present)
Ideas about where to begin can be found by looking at designs of other organizations in this space, like Students for Free Culture, Yale ISP, and Open Video Alliance.
Inspiration from Robert Martinez
