Blender 2.42, Inkscape 0.44, old desktop PC with simple keyboard and 3-button+wheel-mouse
I made simple 3d scene in Blender at first. The render was quite photorealistic, so there was no need to think, how to shade the dice. I used this render as a reference for the next step.
I had imported the render onto Inkscape's canvas and just traced it down by hand. Nothing special, simple bezier shapes and gradients.
I used gradients for shadows as well, since there is no "Gaussian Blur" tool in 0.44.
I made sort of specular reflections on the edges of the cube and around spots to show that they are not 100% sharp. This trick works great to make image more real and attractive.
Unfortunately, I couldn't achieve such realistic view as I planned, and had decided to make it more "cartoony" by adding quite thick edge for the whole dice shape. I used "outset" tool for it.
Even if the object is quite simple it contains a lot of details. Working on details makes the picture more attractive.
