I am currenly redrawing the whole thing in inkscape using blur and mask to simplify and reduce the objects. The final file will look almost the same and be much smaller. I'll post it as a remix of this entry in a few minutes.

much better solution - those gradients were unfixable as is.

Wow! thanks to the use of clones and blur the file size got down to 84Kb from the original 1000Kb of the FH8 file! Now that is what I call progress! edit: It got even lower to 79Kb after cleaning the crap left by illustrator in the header.
