The suggestion to convert fonts to outlines is based on the unpredictable nature of how fonts will be displayed. The letters on this render differently on each of the 3 browsers I viewed it in. So there is the trade-off of being able to edit the letters and knowing how they will render. But I guess you see this as more of a building block than finished clipart.
