How to use SVG

I am new to SVG and not sure what to do with an SVG file. I have a mac and tried to open the file in Illustrator but it appears to be a non-scaleable bitmap image in Illustrator and not a scaleable vector image. What am I missing? I guess I want to know how I can use the SVG images in openclipart using standard Adobe CS2 software.

thx.

Installing with OpenOffice

I'm having difficulty using Open Clipart with OpenOffice 2.0.4. I've downloaded the full openclipart-0.18-full.tar.gz, and extracted the contents to my home directory ~/openclipart-0.18-full. I then copied the ~/openclipart-0.18-full/clipart subdirs to my /opt/openoffice.org2.0/share/gallery dir, but nothing shows up in the OOo Gallery. I then tried to copy the clipart subdirs to my home ~/.openoffice.org2/user/gallery dir, but still nothing in the Gallery. I tried the instructions in the ~/openclipart-0.18-full/INSTALL file, but I can't get past the very first "make install" command:

/home/bruce/openclipart-0.18-full >su
Password:
/home/bruce/openclipart-0.18-full >make install
/bin/install -c -m 755 -d /usr/local/share/clipart/openclipart
make: /bin/install: Command not found
make: *** [install] Error 127
/home/bruce/openclipart-0.18-full >

I'm new to OOo and somewhat new to Linux, so hopefully I'm just missing something that's obvious to someone else. Any help will be appreciated. I'm running Mandriva Linux 2007.

-- Bruce

Hi Bruce,
you need this : | SVG Import Filter for OpenOffice 2.0. This is an addon. Next OppenOffice will integrated directly SVG in the gallery.
You may also download openclipart (OCAL) in Png but images are small (this is what you see in the gallery of OCAL).
How to use png files of OCAL in openoffice. Example :
  • go to /usr/lib/openoffice/share/gallery then create a directory "animals", import in it, png images of animals from OCAL
  • go in the gallery of openoffice, choose "new" and type "animals" (don't close window), choose "search files" and go in /usr/lib/openoffice/share/gallery.

New website for Clipart

Sorry but I gonna continue on wikipedia now. The new website is harder for people witch don't have english as native language. We just need to upload and browse clipart. Now it really not easy. I prefer to upload now on Wikipedia. --Patricia.fidi 16:59, 18 Sep 2006 (PDT)

Im not sure what you mean by "harder". the website is still being developed, if there are any issues that you can see that need to be addressed to make it easier to use, please list them here. The new site is very easy to upload clipart on to, and the browser has not been fully implemented yet. This is why we have a TEST site, so we can test the current site, and make it better. */rant over... Ryanlerch 02:44, 2 October 2006 (PDT)
Ryanlerch, you know that I'm not a newbie. I've been on openclipart since the very beginning. I was already on Sodipodi. You prefer the new site, I prefer the ancient version for reasons I've explained at the bottom. No need to have an explanation about how to use the new site ;-) I just come back here and see that people continue to prefer to upload on the ancient version of openclipart. I prefer too the ancient gallery. So I will come back in 1 month and see what happen. I prefer to leave people to decide the futur of openclipart. --Patricia.fidi 20:27, 12 October 2006 (PDT)

New CSS

The new CSS that is being implemented looks really good! Keep up the good work Theresa! What other ideas do you have for improving the style?
--Ryanlerch 16:01, 8 Sep 2006 (PDT)

Thank you but I can't really take the credit. All I'm doing is copying style ideas from the cchost page. Whoever designed that is responsible for how good the style looks.
I like the tables on the main page, but I think the colours should go and they should be made to look more like the content tables on the cchost website.
Maybe the logo should have a dark grey background? I'm not sure.
I don't think we should change the layout at all. Theresa Knott 00:58, 10 Sep 2006 (PDT)
I agree too for colours. Theresa how do you merge this css in this wiki ? Thanks.--Patricia.fidi 16:14, 10 Sep 2006 (PDT)
I still really don't understand why my personal monobook don't change... I souldn't need more than sysop rights. I gonna try again.--Patricia.fidi 16:58, 10 Sep 2006 (PDT)
I think that the facility for having personal style sheets on this wiki is turned off. I couldn't get mine to work either! As for merging the two you have to look at the two stylesheets, figure out how they refer to the different elements on the page, and then edit MediaWiki:Monobook.css. For example the navigation list on the LHS is called portlet in monobook and cc_sidebar in cchost. So you look at cc-sidebar, spot the differences between that style and the portlet style and then edit. Theresa Knott 21:49, 11 Sep 2006 (PDT)
Thank you Teresa. I give up because it doesn't work for me on this wiki. But I'm sure you'll gonna make something good!--Patricia.fidi 15:49, 15 Sep 2006 (PDT)

Copyright issue

I'm living in Austria and have a huge problem with Public Domain. It looks like it's against law to publish something under Public Domain. There is a possibility, but for this I must be dead for at least ten years. Not really an option. In Germany there is a similar problem.
I could put my works under any Common Creative-License (Normally I use "CC-Nammensnennung". This is the one where there is only a (BY)-sign). There are some judgment's, that tolerate this kind of licenses. But I know no way to put my work under Public Domain.
And I'm no lawyer. I searched the web about this, but it seems that there is really no way, because the law say, that I can't give away ownership of something.
--Frostbringer 03:51, 12 Aug 2006 (PDT)

Wikipedia use this license instead of public domain:
I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.
I will search my data for some graphics and will upload it.
--Frostbringer 14:06, 12 Aug 2006 (PDT)
Hi Frostbringer,
Public Domain keep the name of the original author for ever in France even if the artist give his work without any conditions. We can't say I've done something and it's untrue... The little difference with "by" = you have to write the name under the clipart. With PD, you just have to write in Metadata or under a page. --Patricia.fidi 11:22, 14 Aug 2006 (PDT)
OK, that (by) was a bad idea. But what is with the Wikipedia-clause?
And look on the CreativeCommon page for the PublicDomainLicense: Please note that the Public Domain Dedication may not be valid outside of the United States.. And Austria (little Country in middle Europa, has nothing todo with Australia) is one of this countrys, where this is not possible.

Remove 1 clipart

Could you remove the biggest clipart calling "delaware flag" of about 226ko. I've sent another one calling "us-delaware-flag". Thx --Patricia.fidi 15:59, 8 Aug 2006 (PDT)

Clipart usage

Hi there. I would like to know if and how can the clipart in this site be used in commercial software. Thanks, Malafaya 02:59, 4 Aug 2006 (PDT)

Hello Malafaya,
you may use cliparts in a commercial software because they are under the Public Domain License.
You just have to keep the name of the original artist (see Metadata)--Patricia.fidi 05:22, 4 Aug 2006 (PDT)

SVG in gallery's OpenOffice

Hi there,

thank you for an excellent piece of software.

I just want to confirm something. For me to use the images of Open Clipart Library, I have to install the filter (which consists of three files). I then must OPEN the graphic file in Write which will open Draw and then Copy and Paste it in Draw?

How can I get these images to show by default in my Gallery?

Regards, Deon

Hi Deon,
In OpenOffice 2.0 : Gallery > New Theme > write OCAL
press again New Theme > press Find Files
You are in the gallery's directory - OO will scan all the directory and subdirectories - you may change for another directory where you have all OpenClipArt Library or put all files of the tarball from OCAL in a subdirectory of gallery's oppenoffice
Then OO will ask you to add everyting or just one file.
I hope it will help you --Patricia.fidi 05:17, 1 Aug 2006 (PDT)

Open Content Discussion

Ok, let me start with this discussion! I'm surprised that I'm somehow first here. Ok, it's better to be the first than no one :) I'am happy that we have great place like this on internet, where we can share useful contents, but first I wish to have wider options for uploading and downloading vector graphics. I don't understand why this have to be limited on SVG and WMF(?!) vector graphics only. Why not to collect here also vector formats like .PS, .DXF, .EPS, .VML, .VRML and .BLEND, .DEM, .AI, .CDR, .DRW, .FH10, etc...? I understand that are some formats limited on one application only, but I believe that if there will be interest to convert some files into different formats people will do it. I don't see any problems with law here...

Second, it looks like that you have problems with moving files into right categories. Why don't you leave us to do this time consumig job?

With respect, --Igor

The real problem at the moment is that we haven't got the software to manage things. There should be a web interface to allow users to help categorize images, but that remains to be written (partly because it would need to use the DMS, which isn't finished yet). Ideally, we should accept many more vector image formats, but the software used to produce each release currently only handles SVG. We can handle WMF, but not fully automatically. We should be able to handle PostScript-based files (PostScript/EPS/.ai/PDF), but I think we've only received one so far (and that was damaged by a bug in the upload script). I'm not sure that we could handle something like .cdr, as it may require proprietary software in order to create a thumbnail. 3D formats are outside the scope of the project, at least for now.
If you want to discuss this, it's probably better to post on the mailing list, as not many people read the wiki.

Smaller Package

I wish that the openclipart library was available in smaller packages, divided by categories.

Hi anonymous, There is categories wich are very small for the moment. But one day, we will have a huge library and need to divide by categories.--Patricia.fidi 03:44, 30 Jul 2006 (PDT)

Bounty system

I'd like to see a bounty system, where sponsors could donate money either to the project in general or to a specific image request. General money donated to the project could be used by the project managers to create bounties. Big sponsors like the open office backers could come along and donate large sums of money and thus greatly increase the ability of artists to contribute to the project. The bountys wouldn't be released until the sponsors are satisfied with the quality of the work.

Folksonomy

Why can't we use Folksonomy the way that flickr and the Stock Exchange do? It would help searches work a lot better. --Terrible Tim 08:59, 20 Mar 2006 (PST)

How to download the current version?

Normally, that'd be the classic n00b question, "how do I download the current version?"

Unfortunately, it looks like the bits and pieces to download the complete collection are rather scattered:

I was looking for a simple way to get everything in http://openclipart.org/clipart http://openclipart.org/incoming and http://openclipart.org/cchost/people without downloading everything except the ver 0.18 /clipart (2005) file-by-file.

I'd created an archive (zip/bz2) of everything that's missing from the main (Oct'05) openclipart download area. As .svg-only, it runs a little over 100Mb compressed, in addition to the 90Mb+ of the original openclipart-0.18 SVG packages. Nonetheless, thousands of images remain unsorted.

There is a need for a proper 0.20 release. This isn't it, but is a stopgap measure. --Carlb 11:15, 5 February 2007 (PST)
