Frederick Douglass

A, roughly 1847, portrait of the American pioneer of human rights Frederick Douglas by an unknown artist (though we do know the portrait itself is in the public domain by now). Rendered here with a dark magenta ink with five layers of various opacities of white. You can change the colors easily by changing the fill value of id="Ink" (set to dark magenta here) and the fill value of id="Paper" (set to white here).

Using only five opacities of white preserves the original chiaroscuro (which literally means cleardark or lightdark in Italian, with chiaro being clear/light and scuro being dark—which also exists in such English words as obscure) feel of the image.
