Saint Patrick and the Snakes

It is said that Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. I'm not sure what that would have done to the ecosystem. Seems like that would have been an ecological problem because of the chain of life, but maybe somehow it all worked out. I'm not sure why this one looks like the pope...
