Second cervical vertebra, highly adapted to bear weight and yet remain mobile, co-apt with Axis in holding weight of our skulls. Death in judicial hanging occurs due to fracture of the Odentoid process in the center of this vertebra, called in medical parlance as the "hangman's fracture. A biological marvel machine.
