Private Onsen

Although there are some mixed gender bathing spots, it's pretty uncommon in most places. So opposite gender couples who want to bathe together get private onsen (or so called "family onsen") when they want to enter hot springs together. This is also a good option for guests with tattoos, because many (but not all!) onsen in Japan don't let you get in if you have a tattoo, but nobody cares if it is a private reserved onsen.
