Ignaz Semmelweis (sometimes known as the "saviour of mothers") is the somewhat forgotten Hungarian (of German descent) doctor who first figured out in the 1840s that unclean hands were spreading disease when doctors were helping women giving birth to children, seems like common knowledge now but was a radical idea at the time apparently
