Mephistopheles with wings

The literary demon Mephisto, as depicted in the now destroyed bas relief mural in St Petersburg. The bas relief of the smirking demon was built as an adornment for a modernist guest house completed in 1914, and had become a city landmark. On Wednesday 26th of August 2015, a group of workmen, who refused to identify themselves, drove up to the sculpture, knocked it down, smashed it to pieces, and carted the fragments off to a dump. The statue cannot be restored.





Вчера неизвестные сбили лепную фигуру демона с широко раскинутыми крыльями с фасада дома Лишневского, расположенного в Петербурге на Лахтинской улице, 24. Дом является памятником модерна и находится под государственной охраной как выявленный объект культурного наследия. Особую остроту истории придаёт тот факт, что напротив здания уже шесть лет идёт строительство храма Cвятой Ксении Петербургской.
