On Earth Peace, Goodwill Toward Men

I got curious about the original poet who wrote these lines, and learned a horrific story about how shortly before these lines his wife dropped a candle on herself and burned herself to death by accident. And how he was broken with grief and trying to understand the on going American civil war through those murky thoughts too and these lines (actually rendered slightly differently than commonly remembered, as "Of peace on earth, good-will to men!") were his way with coping with his world.
