Gyaru, or gal, is a Japanese fashion subculture that was popular among high school-aged girls in the 1990s and early 2000s. Common features of this style include bleached or dyed hair, tanned skin, loose socks, and short skirts. Many participants would achieve this look by making alterations to their school uniforms.
A gyaru who sports a school uniform is know as a kogyaru, or kogal.
