An English (and French!) idiom for making a big mistake that makes your situation worse is "shoot yourself in the foot" (or knee if you are speaking German) kind of like when you are feeling poor and disadvantaged so you vote in a wannabe Hitler friend of billionaires because you think that will help you for some reason. Bam! Got political!
